After three years,
we have decided to bring the Councillor’s diary to a close. It is felt that the initiative has run its course and Stuart also feels the limited time he has after work and family commitments could be
better spent.
We now have three councillors in Oxford and are on target to at least double this figure at the May elections next year. All three IWCA councillors work hard and deserve to be equally acknowledged;
singling out Stuart’s work alone, though valid when he was our only councillor, may have begun to convey the false impression that his role is somehow more vital than anyone else’s. This is something
that nobody in the IWCA wants to see, least of all Stuart himself.
Through his diary entries, Stuart has successfully illustrated the utter contempt (and fear) that the establishment, at all levels, continually displays toward the IWCA. Given our current size,
the only conclusion to be drawn is they too recognize the potential of the IWCA’s unashamedly pro-working class politics and this is what troubles them most. This should leave us all encouraged.
As reported on this site, former Cabinet Minister, Andrew Smith underscored his party’s attitude to the IWCA during the recent round of elections. At the Oxfordshire County Council election count,
Smith, who only the previous evening had seen his Oxford East parliamentary majority slashed by the Lib Dems from 10,344 to just 963 votes (with many putting this down to the incremental damage inflicted on
Labour by the constant stream of IWCA ‘exposes’), was nonetheless in celebratory mood.
Even with his party losing 15 out of their original 24 seats on the County Council to the Tories, he, along with his middle class chums, whooped for joy that the IWCA (in their eyes) had been beaten back.
“Clean sweep” he screamed punching the air. Judging by his reaction, it would appear that the party of government had anticipated a higher result for our party at these particular elections than we had
actually expected ourselves!
With the Councillor’s diary being relegated to the archives of this website, we will be setting up a page containing information of all IWCA motions and questions submitted to Oxford City Council.
Hopefully this will satisfy those interested in monitoring the efficacy of the IWCA strategy within the actual council chamber. On top of this, the more politically relevant activities of our three
councillors will no doubt continue to see the light of day in article form, on both this and the Oxford IWCA website.
